Credits and attribution

Origin

Foundational Open Science Skills (FOSS) was created by CyVerse, the National Science Foundation–funded cyberinfrastructure project housed at the University of Arizona, and was presented with the University of Arizona Data Science Institute. CyVerse taught FOSS as a weekly online workshop for several years; the most recent offering recorded here ran in Fall 2025.

Authors and instructors

The FOSS course materials are authored by the instructors who also taught the lessons:

Other contributors to the source repository over its history include Mary Margaret Sprinkle, Ryan Bartelme, Michael Culshaw-Maurer, Eli Schillinger, Jason Williams, and Shashank Yadav.

Lesson 10, AI Models & Where to Find Them, is taught from the separate GPT 101 workshop. Parts of How to Talk to Computers follow the Software Carpentry Unix Shell lesson; third-party figures are credited in their captions.

The UNM Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC) made these changes:

  • Rebuilt the site with Zensical as an Open Knowledge Format (OKF) v0.2 bundle, restyled after the CARC documentation, and reorganized pages into Course, Lessons, Capstone, and About sections with new URLs.
  • Added provenance frontmatter and a source footer to every adapted page, fixed broken links, aligned lesson titles, refreshed a few outdated instructions, and added short tips for UNM CARC users.
  • Dropped archived lessons, the FOSS+ page, the chatbot widget, and unused images. The originals remain in the CyVerse repository.
